Surat: The Saroli police on Saturday arrested three Maharashtra residents attempting to dupe people by disguising bundles of children’s play money as genuine currency, using real notes placed on top of the stacks.
The accused, identified as Dattatrey Rokde and Rahul Vishwakarma from Ahmednagar and Gulshan Gugle from Pune, were apprehended at the Niyol checkpost with three bags filled with the counterfeit notes.
Police recovered 42,914 play notes in Rs 500 denominations and 20,958 in Rs 200 denominations. The fake notes had ‘Bachho Ka Khata’ printed on them. To make the bundles appear authentic, the scammers had topped them with genuine Rs 500 and Rs 200 notes.
The suspects primarily targeted people looking to exchange currency outside banks. In particular, they preyed on those in a hurry, duping them with the fake bundles.
