Mumbai: Sunday’s fire is the second mishap involving Poonam Chambers, a high profile corporate workspace in Worli. On Sept 16, 1997, a portion of the landmark building came crashing, killing 15 and injuring 50 others.
Poonam Chambers then housed the offices of companies like Wockhardt, Standard Chartered, Cable Corporation of India, Nabard, AK Industries, Anchor, US Vitamins and Esab Finance. As the collapse occurred after lunch hour, over 700 people were in the building.
An expert panel attributed the disaster to reckless repair and renovation by a certain corporate. TNN
