In an incredible surprise no one saw coming, a big orchestra and a man with a big drum took the stage at The Game Awards 2024 to reveal Hideki Kamiya’s studio’s new game. And it’s not an new IP – much to our delight, it’s an actual, real sequel to Okami. Okami 2.
We didn’t see much of what Okami 2 actually will be during the show. The reveal consisted of some gorgeous music from the aforementioned orchestra and drummer, and a teaser of presumably Amaterasu running through a field toward the horizon. More to come soon, one must hope!
Capcom has been seeding the ground for a new Okami, quietly, for a while now. Earlier this year, it polled fans to see if they were interested in an Okami sequel, alongside sequels for Dead Rising, Mega Man, Breath of Fire, Dino Crisis, and more. We’ve also been hearing from Kamiya himself lately that he’s been asking Capcom for the opportunity to make both Okami 2 and Viewtiful Joe 3, and that he believes the original Okami team was “weak” and “not a dream team” – suggesting he may have assembled something he’s a little more happy with this time around.
Even if Kamiya believed the original team wasn’t as good as it could have been, we still loved the original Okami. We gave the Wii version a 9/10 way back in the day, calling it “one of the most ambitious and thoroughly enjoyable Wii titles to date.”
