MUMBAI: Students from a private university in Mumbai have made history by earning a spot in NASA’s prestigious 2025 Human Exploration Rover Challenge (HERC). They are the first and only team from India to qualify for the Remote Controlled (RC) division of the global competition, setting a new milestone for Indian representation in this event.
The team comprising 15 students of ATLAS SkillTech University, is one of only three globally selected for the Remote Controlled Rover category. They will represent India at the U.S. Space and Rocket Center, where they will design and build a rover capable of navigating terrains that mimic those found on Mars and the Moon. The challenge involves precise remote operation, demanding the rover to overcome obstacles such as rocks, craters, and steep inclines while performing tasks like collecting scientific samples and maneuvering through narrow spaces.
“This achievement reflects our students’ leadership, vision, and commitment to innovation,” said Siddharth Shahani, Co-founder and Executive President of the university.
NASA HERC is a renowned international event aimed at fostering interest in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM). It brings together teams from around the world to develop innovative solutions for the challenges of space exploration, preparing the next generation of global innovators.
