Mumbai: Medtronic, a healthcare technology company, has received FDA approval for its Percep RC neurostimulator, now available in India. This device, designed for Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) therapy, is the smallest and thinnest dual-channel neurostimulator currently available. It is part of the Percept™ family of devices and adds to Medtronic’s existing range of DBS systems.

The device is equipped with sensing capabilities that help doctors provide tailored treatments for conditions like parkinson’s disease, essential tremor, dystonia, and epilepsy.

Equipped with BrainSense™ technology, the Percept™ RC captures and records brain signals, providing valuable insights that enable healthcare providers to adapt and customise therapy to meet each patient’s evolving needs. Its rechargeable battery, powered by Medtronic’s patented technology, offers an impressive service life of over 15 years with minimal fade, ensuring consistent and reliable performance over time. It recharges rapidly, achieving a 10 per cent to 90 per cent charge in under an hour, providing both convenience and dependability for patients.

Prateek Tiwari, Sr. Director, Neuroscience and Specialty Therapies, Medtronic India said, “This cutting-edge solution aligns with the increasing demand for advanced healthcare innovations and promises a transformative impact on the treatment of complex neurological disorders. With its ability to deliver highly personalised, data-driven therapy, The technology has the potential to significantly improve patient outcomes and offer a new hope for those managing the challenges of chronic neurological conditions.”

Deep brain stimulation (DBS) uses a surgically implanted device, similar to a cardiac pacemaker. The Percept RC neurostimulators send electrical signals through thin wires to specific brain regions affected by neurological conditions like Parkinson’s disease.

Nearly 70 per cent of all DBS-eligible patients are estimated to require an MRI as part of their essential care1. Medtronic offers full-body MR Conditional DBS systems for patients to have safe scans anywhere on the body under specific conditions‡.

The Percept RC neurostimulator supports 3T and 1.5T MRI scans, providing patients with enhanced flexibility for imaging procedures. It is the only DBS system that permits stimulation in bipolar mode during an MRI. Additionally, the device is designed to accommodate future software updates for the Percept™ platform without requiring a replacement of the neurostimulator, the statement added.
