While it is true that Indian cricketers got a breather after a long season, participating in Duleep Trophy could have sealed their position in the national Test squad.

In a strange turn of events, cricketer Ishan Kishan has pulled out of the Duleep Trophy days ahead of the season. The young cricketer was to captain the East Zone squad. The domestic competition could have been a great opportunity for the young player to seal his side in the Indian Test squad.

The decision by the young left-handed batter to pull out of the prestigious domestic contest has left cricketing experts baffled. While it is true that Ishan was picked for the WTC squad, he could not make his debut. With Bharat’s streak of poor batting performances, it is very likely that Ishan could make his Test debut in the Caribbean.

A Zonal selection committee member told PTI the following:

“As he is a senior India regular in white ball, he would have got the captaincy. Chakraborty got in touch with Ishan over phone and came back and told us that he is not interested in playing Duleep Trophy. We were not told if he has an injury or not. Just that he doesn’t want to play.”

Jayanta Dey, the Tripura selector, immediately contacted Wriddhiman Saha after Ishan Kisan declined to participate in the Duleep Trophy. While Saha was happy to be a part of the team, he declined the offer stating that the competition was specifically designed for young players looking to make a mark. The senior wicketkeeper told Dey that if he was never going to play for India, it made no sense to prevent a youngster from coming forth and shining.

An article published on India TV mentions the following:

“With Kishan denying to play in the Duleep Trophy, Abhimanyu Easwaran has been named the captain of East Zone squad that also includes players like Riyan Parag, Mukesh Kumar, Shahbaz Ahmed and Abhisek Porel who recently played in the Indian Premier League.”
