New Delhi was among the first few non-Arab nations to back Palestine Liberation Organization (PLO); however, India’s strong support has lessened in the past couple of decades. In this episode, we will explore India’s delicate balance of power with Palestine.

While India is expanding its ties with Israel, India is slowly shrugging off Palestinian problems.

So, what exactly happened?

India was one of the earliest non-Arab non-Muslim supporters of Palestine, but India’s priority has changed in the last twenty-odd years. While India is looking out for her interests—which it should—Palestine has somehow become less important for New Delhi. Although India makes the right noises on international forums, as far as the problems of Palestinians are concerned, New Delhi looks distant from the injustice faced by the people of this Middle Eastern country.

An article written by Seema Guha and published on Outlook mentions the following, and I quote:

“Since 1992, as India and Israel scaled up diplomatic ties, political relations with Tel Aviv flourished. Israel is now a defense supplier to India and is also involved in agriculture. People-to-people contacts are flowering. New Delhi continues to pay lip service to the need for Palestine’s right to exist as an independent country, yet can do little to promote this…” Close quotes.

While it is true that any visit to Israel meant a visit to Palestine by Indian leaders, it has stopped with New Delhi’s expanding ties with Israel.

The present government is known for its foreign policies and strengthening ties with Middle Eastern countries. Although Israel and Palestine have been in conflict for several decades, the present government has managed to keep friendly relations with both countries.

PM Modi, on International Day of Solidarity with the Palestinian people, said:

“India’s ties with the friendly people of Palestine are rooted in our common history. We have always supported the Palestine people in their pursuit of economic and social development with dignity and self-reliance,” he added. “We are hopeful that direct talks between the Palestinian and Israeli sides will resume finding a comprehensive and negotiated solution.”
