“Great news for football fans across India! It will also encourage upcoming talent in this sport,” Tweeted the honorable Prime Minister of India tagging Kalyan Chaubey, president of AIFF.
The participation of the Indian football team at the Asian Games to be held in Hangzhou, China has sent a wave of happiness in the country. Keeping in mind the teams’ excellent performance and the games growing popularity, PM Modi overlooked the sports ministry’s criteria of sending only teams that rank in the top 8 in Asia.’
After being denied participation by the Sports Ministry, the All India Football Federation along with the head coach Igor Stimac appealed to Prime Minister to intervene in the matter.
The PM later confirmed the participation of the football teams in the prestigious Asian Games.
“Indian football has been making rapid strides in the recent past. We have improved in football as a nation, improving our FIFA ranking, winning three back-to-back international titles,” said Chaubey.
The men’s team will be led by Sunil Chettri the undisputed hero of Indian football and the third-highest goal scorer in the active players’ list.
“Having Sunil Chhetri to lead this team will bring in a lot of value. Coach Igor Stimac’s experience will also come into play in preparation for the event.” India’s number one goalkeeper Gurpreet Singh Sandhu and defensive mainstay Sandesh Jhingan are expected to be the other two over-age players,” mentioned Chaubey.
Men’s team is in Group A, clubbed with Bangladesh, China and Myanmar. The top two teams from each group are expected to enter the knockout stage.
“This has been a new dawn of Indian football and we will collectively continue to work towards developing the sport. Stakeholders’ participation is equally important in this journey, as much as our fans’ support,” added Chaubey.
