Madras High Court recently remarked on a petition against students’ views on ‘Opposition of Sanatan.’ The High Court remarked that Santan includes various sets of eternal duties.
Located in Thiruvarur, Thiru Vi KaGovt Arts College has recently become the home ground for various controversies. The Principal of the college recently circulated a notice asking students’ views on ‘Opposition to Sanatan.’ The circular marks the birth anniversary of the former chief minister of Tamil Nadu, CN Annadurai.
The High Court’s observation comes at a time when state minister Udhayanidhi Stalin’s derogatory remark on Sanatan Dharma has become a topic of debate across the nation. While there have been several politicians and academicians in the past who have raised several issues regarding Santan Dharma, the latest by Stalin is creating headlines.
Why is there so much controversy surrounding Sanatan Dharma lately?
Addressing a press conference in Chennai on September 2, Udhayanidhi Stalin, son of Tamil Nadu Chief Minister MK Stalin, made several derogatory remarks about Sanatan Dharma. The minister even compared the ancient Dharmic religion to “dengue” and Malaria.” As per the DMK minister, Sanatan Dharma was based on the caste system and must be eradicated.”
The derogatory remarks by Stalin were justifiably too bitter for BJP leaders to digest. Major leaders of the BJP such as Amit Shah and Amit Malviya came down heavily on Stalin.
Udyanidhi later commented, “I never called for the genocide of people who are following Sanatan Dharma. Sanatan Dharma is a principle that divides people in the name of caste and religion. Uprooting Sanatan Dharma is upholding humanity and human equality.”
Julius J Lipner, Emeritus Professor of Hinduism and the Comparative Study of Religion at the University of Cambridge, once mentioned the following:
“Many Hindus call themselves Sanatanists, that is, those who follow the eternal dharma. But…it is far from clear what this eternal dharma is.”
Lipner raises a very valid question that several followers of Sanatan have struggled to answer. However, there are several others who have beautifully explained what “this eternal Dharma is.”
The purpose or aim of Sanatan is the eternal aspect of the Dharmic religion. The objective of Sanatan Dharma is the realization of the self—realization that the individual self or Atman and the Cosmic Self Parmatma are one and the same. The Upanishads mention about various Dharmas one should follow to achieve the final realization. The various Dharmic processes and the objective form “this eternal dharma.”
