While it is true that rural women are the torchbearers of socio-economic transformation for New India, they are still confined within the boundaries of the patriarchy.
In this two-part episode, we will explore how women are dominated by men in the family despite their contribution to society.
India is rapidly moving towards being the third-largest economy in the world. The nation has embraced science and technology, which has allowed it to compete with top Western nations of the world. While India has become the first country in the world to land its probe on the dark side of the moon, Indian rural women are still facing the burden of patriarchy.
Agriculture is the largest sector in India and is also the biggest provider of employment. The sector provides 80 percent of the rural women with employment. The employment of women in the agricultural sector will help the economy of India.
Not only are rural women involved in various agricultural activities, but they are also vital in the decision-making process of a rural community. One way rural women are involved in the decision-making process of the rural communities is through Panchayat. The Gram Panchayat is an important part of a village community, where people make important decisions regarding the future. The Government of India has taken several important steps to ensure that rural women participate and put forth their ideas in the decision-making process of the village community.
The government ensures the participation of women by reservation. Article 243D Clause (3) ensures the participation of rural women by reserving 33 percent of the total number of seats.
An article published on Constitution of India mentions the following:
“ Not less than one-third (including the number of seats reserved for women belonging to the Scheduled Castes and the Scheduled Tribes) of the total number of seats to be filled by direct election in every Panchayat shall be reserved for women and such seats may be allotted by rotation to different constituencies in a Panchayat.”
While several steps are being taken by the Government of India to ensure the participation of rural India in the decision-making process, they are still confined within the structures of the patriarchy. Despite women becoming Sarpanch or the head of the Panchayat, the men in the family influence the decisions made by her.
In the next episode, we will explore how the woman is dominated by males in her family despite being fully capable of making independent decisions and choices.
