Children from this Red Light District are Changing their Fate through Sports

Sukha Karar is turning the tide in its favor by discarding its infamy and allowing children into sports.

Hardly six kilometers away from the famous Sanchi Stupa is a village with three hundred families of the ‘Bedia’ tribe, a gypsy community. Sukha Karar, a village in the Raisen Red Light district of Madhya Pradesh attracts thousands of visitors every year, and the reason is prostitution.

The women in the village took to prostitution several decades ago; however, the Sukha Karar is now trying to discard its infamy desperately.

Various institutions and NGOs are working round the clock to change the perception that the village has acquired over the years. Guria Foundation is one such organization that is reshaping history by giving the children of the village a chance at sport, which would enable them to carve a different career.

Sports such as Kho Kho, Kabaddi, and Volleyball are being taught to the children of the village. The children have won several awards for their outstanding performances. The children are extremely motivated and have quickly gone on to make a name for themselves. Their hard work and perseverance are beginning to pay off. The professional kabaddi team of the Raisen district has eight out of twelve children in the under-18 team. Furthermore, girls from the village have been selected for various sporting events where they will represent the state.

An article published on Village Square mentions the following:

“The promising start notwithstanding, a long and arduous journey awaits the children. For one, Sookha Karar has not put its past entirely behind it. While the number of those engaged in prostitution in the village has significantly declined, there are still some who continue to be in the profession – charging some rupees 500 to rupees 1000 for providing carnal pleasure. Further, the children are yet to totally break free of the stereotyping that their ‘notorious’ village thrust upon them.”

Sukha Karar village is paving the path for other communities that wish to discard their past and embrace the future. This MP village is not alone in fighting the battle; several communities in villages and towns across India tread on the darker side of life. However, if given an opportunity, they can turn the tide in their favor.

The Village Square article reads:

“Residents of the village sound optimistic. ‘People are aware of our dark side, but they also ought to know about the new wave that has occurred,’ pointed out a woman who cannot be identified because of her profession.

Sookha Karar has clearly set its sights on turning a new leaf, becoming the state’s sports village.”
