Ahmedabad: The rankings for 2023-24 under the Gujarat State Institutional Ranking Framework (GSIRF) were announced on Thursday in Gandhinagar. The top 16 institutes were felicitated by state higher and technical education minister Rushikesh Patel, along with senior education department officials.
In total, 565 educational institutes participated in the exercise aimed at preparing the institutes for the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) procedure. The rankings were not released earlier due to the Lok Sabha elections, said sources. Thus, the rankings, when the academic year is half over, might not be useful for students or parents but may serve as a continuation of the overall exercise.
Four universities — Gujarat University, Pandit Deendayal Energy University (PDEU), Nirma University, and CEPT University — received a five-star plus rating, whereas 13 universities received a five-star rating in the exercise by the Knowledge Consortium of Gujarat (KCG) and the Indian Centre for Academic Rankings & Excellence (ICARE). In the research category, IIPH-G got the highest rank, whereas in the medical and engineering categories, GMERS College Vadodara and LD College of Engineering got the highest rank. PD Patel Institute of Applied Sciences received the highest ranking among colleges.
Officials close to the process said that multiple criteria, including academic performance, research and development, teacher-to-student ratio, infrastructure, etc., are assessed for the ranking. Sources, however, pointed out that several of the institutes fail to make a mark in NIRF or do not participate in the exercise. “Understanding the ranking procedure may help Gujarat-based institutions to make a mark nationally,” said sources.
